At the close of the Constitutional Convention in 1787, Dr. James McHenry, a Maryland delegate, followed Benjamin Franklin from Independence Hall. He recorded a question asked by a lady, directed at Dr. Franklin.

The lady asked, "Well Doctor, what have we got? A republic or a monarchy?"

"A republic," replied Dr. Franklin, "if you can keep it."

The Chicago Success Story

(Yes, this is a photoshopped graphic)

Chicago has long been the Democratic Party's testing platform for every liberal program and for every progressive idea. Detroit has been a close second, but Detroit can not boast the political luminaries that the Chicago Political Machine and the State of Illinois has spawned:

President: Barack Obama (and his staff are all from Chicago)
Illinois State Senator: Dick Durbin
Illinois House Representative: Jesse Jackson Jr.
(He had to resign - they are waiting for another Democrat to replace him--see below)
Illinois Governor: Pat Quinn
State of Illinois House leader: Mike Madigan
State of Illinois Atty. Gen.: Lisa Madigan (daughter of Mike)
City of Chicago Mayor: Rahm Emanuel
The Leadership in Illinois  are all Democrats.

President Obama wanted to "fundamentally transform America" into Chicago - make the world Chicago.

The Chicago school system is rated the very worst in the country.
They can't blame Republicans; there aren't any, but they can and do state that the reason that they are the worst school system in the country is because the need more money. High school teachers will earn over $100K per year but that's not nearly enough.
The Illinois State pension fund $78 Billion in debt.
They can't blame Republicans because there aren't any, but if the nation as a whole could chip in, the pension fund deficit would go away. Brother can you spare a dime?
The Cook County sales tax is 10.25%. It's highest in country, followed closely by the Democratic Party bastion (and like Chicago, crime free city) of Los Angeles County.
And it's still nowhere near high enough to see to the needs of government in the county that hosts Chicago. Why?
Politicians Living at Public Expense
  • George Ryan is no longer Governor, he is in prison.
  • He was replaced by Governor Rob Blagojevich who is now in prison.
  • Representative Jesse Jackson Jr. resigned but it looks like he's also going to prison.
Chicago has the strictest gun laws in America
The body (murder) count in Chicago regularly exceeds US combat deaths in Afghanistan. If they could only enact MORE legislation, I'm sure that the murder rate would eventually decline.
Even with a murder rate that they're able to maintain at between two and three hundred per month, the most dangerous place for a black person in Chicago is in the womb.

The Chicago crew that America loves to love are bringing all of that collective wisdom that made Chicago what it is -- to you. Isn't that special?

Does sending governors to prison save money on pensions?

I believe that the law in Illinois is written such that you get to KEEP your pension even though you're locked up for malfeasance in office. The sinecure is safe. And for all I know, the State of Illinois puts "money on the books" for you while you're in the Big House so that you can buy drugs, cigarettes, weapons, soap-on-a-rope, condoms, candy or other incidentals and sundries.
