At the close of the Constitutional Convention in 1787, Dr. James McHenry, a Maryland delegate, followed Benjamin Franklin from Independence Hall. He recorded a question asked by a lady, directed at Dr. Franklin.

The lady asked, "Well Doctor, what have we got? A republic or a monarchy?"

"A republic," replied Dr. Franklin, "if you can keep it."

It sounds like this

Georg Friedrich Händel - Halleluja (Messias) is best when heard in German since that is the language in which it was written. When I was a young boy we had records of the complete Messiah - in German. We often sang Christmas songs in German. I still love the songs best when sung in German because it evokes memories of home, snow at Christmas, and holidays celebrated with a great deal of love and not much money.

The spirit of the Season is not an orgy of spending, but it is about being with those you love and dragging "Peace on Earth and Good Will toward all Men" out of the drawer. Enjoy the sounds of Christmas:

Oh, that's so beautiful. I've never heard it in German, but it's truly lovely.

And Handel wrote the entire three part Messiah oratorio in only three or four weeks (1741). Inspired by God? I'd say so.
