At the close of the Constitutional Convention in 1787, Dr. James McHenry, a Maryland delegate, followed Benjamin Franklin from Independence Hall. He recorded a question asked by a lady, directed at Dr. Franklin.

The lady asked, "Well Doctor, what have we got? A republic or a monarchy?"

"A republic," replied Dr. Franklin, "if you can keep it."

Treaties

On December 4, NATO's foreign ministers decided Dec. 4 to extend a Membership Action Plan to Montenegro, a country of some 700,000 souls. The country is roughly as large as a medium sized American city. It split from Serbia in 2006. By all accounts, it's a pretty country.

Under the terms of NATO membership, an attack on Montenegro would be treated as an attack on the United States, Canada, Germany or any other NATO nation's home soil and we would be obliged to react appropriately.

The only country that considers Montenegro strategic is Serbia, since the port of Bar (a city, not a pub)  which the Serbian government is trying to purchase, is Belgrade’s only link to sea lanes since the collapse of Yugoslavia.

In 1999 NATO conducted an air war against Serbia, so it may be said to be hostile. However, as improbable as it seems, However, the Serbian military frequently trains with the Ohio National Guard (don't ask me why because I don't know).

My question is WHY? With respect to the people of Montenegro - I don't know any of you and if I did, I'm sure I'd like you, I don't want to go to war if you decide to do something stupid. Why do we want to link ourselves by treaty to Montenegro?

If you ask me, I don't want any of those crazy Balkan countries in NATO. I'm not all that crazy about NATO in any event, as I recall it was aligned to protect Europe ('Old Europe' as Rumsfeld put it) from Soviet expansion.

I have heard that the beaches in Montenegro are spectacular, though. When they are not getting bombed and strafed, that is.

Interesting what real news is going on outside in the world--I mean after you sift through the Tiger Woods and Lindsay Lohan stories.

Interesting discussion.. the other question I have is if there is an attack on Montenegro, should they expect NATO support proportionate to their population and/or land mass, as compared to the "support" we've received over the last decade in the wake of September 11th?

If that's the case, they're screwed.

They would expect and be entitled under the treaty to the full force and might of the United States (including monetary aid). That's why I wonder we'd go along with it.

700,000. Main source of income (GDP) Smuggling. 70% are on some sort of pension. Yea, 7 out of 10. A population that can't defend it self from the Invading Al-Qaeda. That's right Bubba helped Al-Qaeda take Kosovo. Albania is the jihadi's largest base of Ops (like HQ).
Lets wait and listen for whining from Greece, when part of Greece is defending it self from extremist trying to set up shop.
