At the close of the Constitutional Convention in 1787, Dr. James McHenry, a Maryland delegate, followed Benjamin Franklin from Independence Hall. He recorded a question asked by a lady, directed at Dr. Franklin.

The lady asked, "Well Doctor, what have we got? A republic or a monarchy?"

"A republic," replied Dr. Franklin, "if you can keep it."

Can We Trust Obama?

The American People put their trust in the chief executive they elect. The last three (Obama, Clinton and GW Bush) could never have held a security clearance because of drug use and in Obama's case there are other issues - such as citizenship questions, hidden/sealed records and Marxist affiliation that would have been disqualifying.

In the case of elected officials, the will of the people over-rides the bureaucratic process that people would have otherwise have to wade through. I'm not necessarily opposed to this. The will of the people is what the democratic process is all about.

On issues of healthcare, of the wisdom of taking over AIG Insurance, General Motors, Citi Group and other massive firms, the sublimation of the banking industry and a myriad of other daunting problems the president does have authority to act on - we have to trust him.

Has he proven himself trustworthy? Has he told the truth to the American people or does he only tell "convenient truth" when it suits his purposes to do so?

Can we keep our Republic if our president is inherently untrustworthy?

Thanks LL - but I'm a little confused. Are you suggesting that the Republic is bankrupt and needs to be replaced by something else? Or that its leader is no good and has to be replaced?

I'd agree with the latter and, as a founder member of the Charles I Club (prestigous), don't have that much of a dog in the fight viz. the former.

Do clarify.

There should be a bond of trust between the people and their president. How can that exist when the president is untrustworthy, ie - a compulsive liar? I'm suggesting that he should be a one-term president.

When I see the process of government - evidenced by "don't read it, sign it" pushed by the Chicago Machine - corrupted to the point where immoral legislation well beyond the scope of the Constitution is forced on the American people, the people need to consider who they elected to represent them. The American People (We The People) need to consider replacing them with new representatives.

My daddy always told me to read what I sign.

And when we hear Obama's words, we need to do as my mother told me. Consider the source.

Thanks LL - I think you're right! Lets hope that the people wake up to the issue.

I agree with some of what you are saying. Many years ago, I read this book, The Dysfunctional Congress, or something to that affect. The reality is, unless something is pushed, and hard, nothing gets passed of any substance.

Congress, as a whole, is its own downfall. There are so many bills, so many issues, so many committees, that nothing gets done.

I would hazard a guess that Obama, having been a member of Congress himself, understands that unless he is pushy, nothing he wants will get through.

Now, regarding the passage of the Cap'n Trade bill, how is that any different than the passage of the Patriot Act? But, the fact is, Obama is not condoning debate on the bill, he is in fact advocating it. And, whether something is televised on CSPAN or not is, unfortunately, not something, I think has control over. He was speaking to presidential transparency. (Some things do need to remain confidential.)

Finally, let's remember who actually drafted these bills, while Obama tells Congress what he wants, it is ultimately at the discretion of Congress how to draft these bills, not the president, which is why Obama supports the Senate version over the House's. This isn't 1970, we need not fear the spread of communism, and neither do I believe Obama see's himself as a communist or socialist if you will.
