At the close of the Constitutional Convention in 1787, Dr. James McHenry, a Maryland delegate, followed Benjamin Franklin from Independence Hall. He recorded a question asked by a lady, directed at Dr. Franklin.

The lady asked, "Well Doctor, what have we got? A republic or a monarchy?"

"A republic," replied Dr. Franklin, "if you can keep it."

Egypt Vacation: The Antidote for Civilization

I hear that travel bookings in Egypt are off and there are great deals to be had. The pyramids at Giza, Karnak, the Nile, etc. On the Nile tour, you simply have to understand that the tour boat will be maneuvering to avoid the carcasses floating to the Med. Maybe that is why tourism is off? Go figure?

Egypt's President Morsi has been ousted and replaced by Chief Justice of the Court, the constitution has been temporarily suspended while the Army re-writes the one crafted for the Muslim Brotherhood.

And the great Arab Spring hope of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton dissolves completely. All of the meddling, all of the gifts and showered aid couldn't make a sow's ear into a silk purse. And while I usually do not rub their progressive noses in it, "I told you so".

Fundamentalist Islam is at odds with civilized society and it is an enemy of 'progress'. Though so-called progressives can't ever seem to get it, it's a fact.

DOMA - An opinion on an opinion

Nobody ever accused me of being a liberal or "progressive". However, I feel that the Supreme Court acted in accordance with the Constitution when they ruled the way that they did in regard the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).

Bill Clinton signed DOMA into law and has subsequently repudiated his actions because of political expediency. What else is new?

I usually refer to homosexuality as "sodomy" and those who practice it as "sodomites", so I'm not particularly sensitive to those lifestyle choices -- though legally, adults have the right to engage in sexual activities in any permutation of ways (kama sutra). I personally feel that gay marriage is wrong, though there are matters that have yet to be addressed in regard insurance and basic human decency that have nothing to do with where you put your parts.
  • Why do you have to be "married" to apply your insurance coverage to a second person?
  • Why do you have to be "married" to have a loved one at your bedside at your death?
In this case, a Lesbian Couple who was married in Canada where it is legal, moved to NY where gay marriage is legal. One of the women died and the IRS wanted to charge inheritance taxes to transfer the estate to her partner. However according to the law there is no estate tax when the estate goes from one spouse to the other. According to NY law there would be no estate tax.

The Supreme Court Ruling held that marriage is regulated by the states not the federal government. If a couple is married in a state that recognizes gay marriage, the federal government has to recognize it. They didn't stop the federal government from not recognizing gay marriage in states where it is not a recognized union.

The Supreme Court punted the ball to the states. If that same couple had moved to Utah, where gay marriage is not legal, the federal government would be obligated to recognize their marriage but Utah would not. Thus the federal government would be unable to encroach on state law (10 Amendment).

The Prop 8 decision was punted for a similar reason, that the Supreme Court did not want to get involved in what is basically a local decision.

The court held that the Constitution should apply -- which is what they should always do, and left the matter to the states to decide.

Irish MP tags Obama a "War Criminal"

Clare Daly, a fiery Irish Member of Parliament speaks (below). She rips the shameful, sycophantic American media for supporting a ‘war criminal’ and the ‘hypocrite of the century.’ I guess that the Irish Parliament don't have that tingle going up their legs when they listen to Barack and Michelle.

I wonder whether or not that means that Barack Obama will have to hand in his Nobel Peace Prize?

Future Crime Unit - NSA in Action

There was a time when the NSA's data mining program would be viewed as a direct violation of the Fourth Amendment. Today, it's national policy. While I understand the FISA Court, I feel that it's a recipe for abuse.

Benghazi Massacre?

It's time to move on. The Benghazi Massacre happened last September -- that was a long time ago.

Squirm and lie -- it's a pattern.

Obama's War on American Cities

American cities, counties and states can't print money or run up trillions in debt. They are required by law to exercise a modicum of control over their finances. Not so with the Federal Government, which grows - and grows - and spends. Municipalities fund many of their large infrastructure projects through issuing tax-free bonds. Municipal bonds are issued to finance roads, schools, libraries, hospitals, and water and sewer systems, as well as the vast public indebtedness of states like Illinois, California and New York. Municipal bonds have been tax-free for the past century, but the Obama Budget is poised to change that.

ObamaCare is very expensive. And the president is trying to find a way to pay for both that and his out-of-control expansion of the federal government. In his present budget proposal, there is a funding mechanism that has not received much scrutiny from the press because they are focused on having their telephones tapped and e-mail read, on the IRS Scandal, the Benghazi Scandal and so forth.

President Obama proposes that the tax free status of municipal bonds be revoked.
(IBD) The math is simple. Instead of paying 3.5% for long-term bonds, states and localities would have to offer 6% at a time when their budgets are already stretched to the breaking point. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo says his state's borrowing costs would soar by nearly $16 billion over the next five years.
Mike Nicholas, CEO of the Bond Dealers of America, estimates state and local borrowing costs could rise by 70% or more. He adds that this measure would not simply target wealthy investors. It would force middle-class citizens to pay more for state and local services by permanently damaging the market for tax-exempt bonds that make funding those services possible at reasonable costs.
A report by the National League of Cities estimated that if the administration's proposal had been in effect during the last decade, it would have cost states and localities a staggering $173 billion in additional interest-related expenses to finance their infrastructure projects.
The Tenth Amendment (Bill of Rights) to the US Constitution allows States to manage their own finances without interference from the Federal Government, however as with the rest of the Bill of Rights, this is under attack across the board -- now to include the issue of muni-bond funding.
The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.

This idea could not come at a
worse time for states and municipalities
still reeling from the Great Recession.

The Federal Government has added massive obligations on states through programs such as ObamaCare without providing the funds to pay for these massive welfare programs (buying votes). In most cases, the States need to borrow to pay for them. That borrowing (debt) mechanism is through issuing municipal bonds. Under the Obama Budget, already crippling debt will become worse. Cities, counties and states will pass on their costs in the only way they can --- through taxation and an increase in fees that they charge. Most taxpayers won't link it to President Obama, and that's what he's counting on.

Obama: The Last One to Know?

The IRS scandal hasn't completely touched most of the mainstream media. Does that mean that President Obama has to watch Fox News to learn what's really going on... :^)

Even though President Obama apparently didn't know (FYI):

Beginning in March 2010, the IRS more closely scrutinized certain organizations applying for tax-exempt status under Section 501(c)(4)[9] by focusing on groups with certain words in their names. In May 2010, some employees of the "Determinations Unit" of the Cincinnati office of the IRS, which is tasked with reviewing applications pertaining to tax-exempt status, began developing a spreadsheet that became known as the "Be On The Lookout" list. This list, first distributed in August 2010, suggested intensive scrutiny of applicants with names related to the Tea Party movement and other conservative causes. By June 2011, the criteria also included names such as "patriot", "Constitution", Bill of Rights" and "9/12." Eventually, IRS employees in at least Cincinnati, Ohio; El Monte, California; Laguna Niguel, California; and Washington, D.C. flagged applications for closer scrutiny.

For a 27-month period that began in February 2010, the IRS did not approve any Tea Party organizations that had submitted applications. During that same time period, numerous liberal organizations with names including words such as “progress” or “progressive” did receive approval.

This is how tyranny advances: The government progressively limits the freedom of institutions that can challenge its political authority (such as the Tea Party or its moral authority (the churches) or that reveal inconvenient facts (the press).

The more it succeeds at this, the more it controls what people know and how they think.
